Electronic Arts has announced another big name for its upcoming silmply titled mixed martial arts game, MMA: UFC Ultimate Fighting Championship) superstar Randy Couture.

Couture and his epic feud with Chuck Liddell get a lot of the credit for bringing the relatively new sport to mainstream popularity. At an August 15, 2009, event, Couture confirmed to ESPN that he will appear in the EA representation of mixed martial arts even though he is under contract to UFC. THQ is currently doing UFC games, with its latest effort UFC 2009 Undisputed being pretty well received.

Couture negotiated the video game deal before he resigned with UFC in 2008, so he wasn’t bound by any of their licensing issues with THQ. This could be an awkward situation but, since Couture only has two fights left on his UFC contract, he could be retired by EA’s planned 2010 release date. Other high-profile fighters confirmed for the game include Gegard Mousasi and Russian heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko, a man many experts call the best pound-for-pound competitor in the sport. EA Sports President Peter Moore has called this game “second leg” of efforts to “reenergize and redefine the fighting category,” the first, of course, being Fight Night Round 4.

Couture has been trying his hand at acting as well, so as it turns out his fighting game appearance is his second video game stint. Couture played the role of Commander Warren Fuller in Command and Conquer 3: Red Alert. That game’s cast would make the beginnings of one heck of a pay-per-view as it also starred MMA star Gina Carano and an expansion pack included pro wrestling legend Ric Flair.
