onLive
onLive, the new service that will allow gamers to play now-gen games on any computer or TV set using streaming technology, is about to get a whole lot more real. The public beta begins now – so if you’re interested, sign up (and do so quickly) at the site and get ready to get your game on. The service will reportedly host a slew of games from sponsor publishers, spanning the PC/console spectrum.

Of course, you’re probably going to need a pretty beefy broadband connection – onLive’s magic relies on that factor. That and a whole bunch of encoding trickery and other technical details, of course.

If onLive really does work (and many experts agree that our industry is moving towards this type of technology), then I, for one, embrace it. I have to admit, I’m getting a little sick of hauling clunky consoles around and dealing with all the platform exclusivity hoo-ha. Plus, I just think it would be amazing to be able to play something like, oh, I don’t know, Batman: Arkham Asylum on my mom’s little netbook at Christmas. That thought just fills me with glee, for some reason.

In any event, we’ll find out soon enough whether the service really is “the future of gaming”.
