OK, so this year’s high-tech holiday gift cards are arguably lower tech than previous years but they are still kinda cool.
This year’s cards are more retro style toys than high tech gadgets. Each requires that you $25 on it before you can take it home or you can order it online for an additional $1.95 for shipping and handling. And, no, they don’t simply have blinking lights or silly sounds, a standard feature in some of the thicker-than-credit-card style gift cards.
The first is a wind-up puppy Target holiday gift card. It’s a small plastic wind-up toy that comes packaged on a backer board and has a small sled that the dog can pull behind him.
The second, and slightly more technologically advanced card, is the remote controlled Target holiday gift card. It’s a small plastic mouse wearing a Santa hat sitting in a tiny shopping cart that you control with a two-button remote shaped like a piece of cheese. Very cute. These recently sold out online but some stores may still have some so make certain you ask if they have any at the Customer Service counter.
Last year’s (2008) holiday gift card was a digital camera. It wasn’t the greatest quality camera but still a neat idea. You had to put $50 on it before they’d let you (legally) take it home which is no big deal since you could put the money on it, then immediately use it on your transaction. Target also offered a pretty handy Speed Racer-themed USB drive gift card earlier that year.
One of my favorite simple toy Target gift cards is still the Transformers transforming gift card, which seems to occasionally re-appear up in stores.

Of course, don’t forget to bundle that with a bargain game or console.
