smithsonian logoThink games are not art? Plebeian.

The Smithsonian American Art Museum obviously disagrees and is putting together a six-month exhibit to, as the Smithsonian site describes, “examine comprehensively the evolution of video games themselves as an artistic medium.”

Dubbed “The Art of Video Games,” the exhibit will run March 16, 2012, to September 9, 2012, and will be (guest) curated PastPixels founder, Chris Melissinos, formerly of Sun Microsystems and ncSoft.

The exhibit will include “multimedia presentations of game footage, video interviews with developers and artists, large prints of in-game screen shots, historic game consoles and a selection of working game systems for visitors to play.”

Games and game system as featured exhibits is not a new idea. In 2006 there was an exhibit called “Game On” at the Pacific Science Center in Seattle, Washington (USA), that included game character sketches, interactive exhibits and myriad game systems including original Pong arcade cabinets.

  1. Thank you for noticing that Game On was around before, although it was around in 2002 in the UK and is still touring to this date, as it will be in Mexico in the Summer…

  2. Excellent. Didn't realize Game On was still touring. I might still have photos from the exhibit.
