Halo Reach

A new trailer for the latest installment of the Halo franchise, Halo: Reach, was debuted at the Video Game Awards (VGAs).

Halo has been one of the most popular properties in the entertainment industry and, with this upcoming prequel, the spotlight is again on the war against the Covenant.

Although the trailer didn’t show any gameplay footage, it offered various clues about some of the features that may be included in the new game.

Several new Spartans are presented in the trailer, along with a female Spartan with what looks like a robotic arm. All of them have different armor and none of it looks like the armor we’re used to seeing on Master Chief. One of the new Spartans has an awesome helmet with a skull painted on it that resembles Ghost’s mask from Modern Warfare 2.

To me this points out to a squad based gameplay or at least the ability to choose different types of Spartans. The different types of armor point towards different abilities and styles of play.

During the trailer we can hear one of the Spartans pointing to “no more lone wolf stuff” and asking about a “number 6,” meaning a sixth member. Again, I think this points to some type of squad-based gameplay.

I was hoping for new Spartans from the novels, like Sam or Kelly, for this game. Each of them had unique abilities including speed or strength and would be a good fit for a game featuring different playable Spartans but I guess they will not be in the game. Now that I think of it, the Spartans from the trailer are those on the poster so, aside from a cameo, fans of the novels are out of luck.

Halo: Reach is coming on 2010 for the Xbox 360.
