Dawn's Light: A Christmas Tale

Title: Dawn’s Light: A Christmas Tale
Price: Free
System(s): Windows PC
Release Date: December 15, 2009
Publisher (Developer): John Wizard Games (John Wizard Games)
ESRB Rating: N/A. I’d say it’s appropriate for all ages.
Pros: Lots of puzzles, side quests to undertake, surprisingly long for a free game, contains the same humor as Dawn’s Light and its free.
Cons: You may want to at least play the Dawn’s Light demo before playing. Music and sounds are generic.
Overall Score: Two thumbs up, 90/100, A-, * * * * out of 5

This year, indie developer John Wizard Games has presented its fans, and the entire internet, with quite a Christmas gift. Instead of just offering a discount on its first game, Dawn’s Light, or some kind of cute Christmas card or holiday add-on, it has released Dawn’s Light: A Christmas Tale, a full free game.

Dawn's Light: A Christmas Tale

Christmas is in trouble! Summon characters from a video game to help save it!

Christmas is stolen by John Naught! So, game developer John Wizard finds he must face his old foe to save it. But doing it alone would be too troublesome, so he goes into his previous game, Dawn’s Light and gets its stars Harvey, Vera and Tyson to help him. (They’re doing it for the Santa hats.) Once they get to the real world, the three say that just saving Christmas is too easy, and also take on candy cane retrieval and elf rescue sidequests.

Of course, once John Naught realizes John Wizard has brought in Dawn’s Light characters, he asserts that it isn’t fair and recruits the Masked Man and Lord Adolin Swordhand: Cryer of Tears to help him with his Christmas ruining scheme.

Dawn's Light: A Christmas Tale

All about solving puzzles and running errands.

Even though there’s really no fighting, Dawn’s Light feels like an RPG. After all, you’re helping townsfolk and running all kinds of errands in a fantasy environment. Plus, all of the puzzles feel like they’re lifted right out of a classic action RPG, like Lufia.

And hopefully, you like puzzles since saving Christmas in Dawn’s Light: A Christmas Tale is all about solving puzzles. Well, that and searching every barrel. Solving puzzles, which is what you’ll spend most of your time doing, involves tasks like helping singles at a speed dating event get together so you can get past, finding roasted chestnuts for an angry ogre named Barry Gibbs, catching squirrels or pushing lots of boulders and blocks. As you’re journeying through the woods and mountains, solving puzzles to progress through the world, you’ll also run across many, many barrels. Inside all of them are candy canes for the candy cane sidequest.

Another plus is that Dawn’s Light: A Christmas Tale has the same stellar script as the original Dawn’s Light. It’s funny and witty, and you really want to pay attention, and even replay the game, so you can savor it all and ensure you haven’t missed anything.

Best of all, it’s free. A high quality game for free is always a good thing.

Dawn's Light: A Christmas Tale

A pleasant Christmas surprise.

Dawn’s Light: A Christmas Tale may feature the stars of Dawn’s Light as part of its main cast, but don’t let that deter you from downloading and enjoying this fantastic free game. It’s filled with all kinds of puzzles and sidequests, many humorous, and looks great. Also, even though it does center around saving Christmas, it’s so well made that it could be played and enjoyed any time of the year. It’s free, and definitely worth checking out on your days off of work or school this holiday season.
