Nintendo DS distracts robber

Nintendo DS There’s a robber on the loose in Joliet, Illinois, who just can’t resist the lure of the Nintendo DS. On Monday, December 28, 2009, an apartment was broken into while the un-named owner momentarily stepped out. When the resident returned, the burglar ran out of her apartment. When police arrived, it was discovered that her DS, which was on when she left, had been played by the intruder.

Surprisingly, her DS may have prevented the crook from taking more than he did. Police reported that only the resident’s bedroom was disheveled by the criminal, and the only item reported missing in the Chicago Sun-Times story was a pink iPod Touch. The burglar even left the Nintendo DS behind. I’m guessing he was probably so alarmed when the owner came home that his first instinct was to drop it and run.

Unfortunately, police didn’t say which game was in the DS. Imagine how many people it could have helped! Even better, the company which made said game could have developed a new advertising angle. “Our game is so good, if you leave it on while you’re out of the house, burglars will be too distracted by it to steal your stuff!”

I guess the moral of the story is, make sure and leave your DS on and with an addicting game in it in a very visible spot whenever you leave the house. That way, if someone breaks in, he’ll see that first, start playing and get too preoccupied to steal.

  1. The end was VERY redundant… lacking clever words. D:
