Super Stardust HD

Super Stardust HD was one of the first must buy PSN games to be released. Its concept was a simple twin stick shooter that took place in space. SSD HD‘s lifespan was extended when the PS3 introduced Trophy support and now it may get an even longer shelf life when it goes 3D.

SSD HD in 3D was one of a few 3D games Sony had on display at CES 2010. The setup featured one controller with three pairs of 3D glasses on each side. This allowed one person to play the game and two others to watch. These glasses were the same ones Sony had the audience put on during its press conference the previous night. When I put the glasses on and started playing, I instantly saw a difference.

The 3D effects made everything in the game appear more round and elevated than normal. The high definition graphics were very pleasant to look at and was certainly something I haven’t experienced before. The most impressive thing about the 3D graphics happened when I would blow up a large asteroid. The small fragments from the rock rushed toward my eyes and made me shift my weight in an attempt to dodge them.

Other than the initial impression of “wow this is different,” I wasn’t blown away by the 3D effects. I’m glad it didn’t affect the way I performed in the game. I managed to clear most of the first planet without getting hit. It just doesn’t seem like it’s worth potentially spending thousands of dollars on a 3D HDTV. We’ll have to see what else 3D gaming can bring to the table before a true verdict can be delivered.
