I know I was not the only kid who took those plastic army men (sold in bulk at most dollar stores) and found various ways to destroy them.
Developer Signal Studios has your hookup with Toy Soldiers, a real-time strategy game featuring little plastic men on the big stage of World War I. This title is coming exclusively to the Xbox Live Arcade in Spring 2010.
It features both authentic WWI units such as biplanes and also fun concepts such as the Tsar Tank, a gigantic two-wheeled vehicle that existed in blueprints but was deemed too impractical to actually be built.
Video game designers aren’t bound the actual laws of physics, so now the Tsar Tank will finally get its chance to determine the fate of battles in WWI.
I’m a huge RTS buff and I am definitely pumped for this effort. The showroom demo was easy enough to pick up and play but looked to have some greater strategic depth. That’s a winning combo in the RTS world.
You can control things from the perspective of the battle at large, or pick individual units to control. The biplane I boarded even came with a “bomb’s eye” view of the carnage. If WWI participants had the advantage of the Tsar Tank and Bomb’s Eye View, the conflict would have probably lasted all of six minutes.
I expect I’ll spend a lot more than that with this game when it hits XBLA. A caveat, though. If this game doesn’t feature a Martika-laden soundtrack, there better at least be an Xbox achievement called “They All Fall Down.”
