There was some talk about extending the connective capabilities of the PS3 and PSP but nothing that screamed you must buy one of these devices immediately.
Yes, I am well aware that the PS3 is only one of the quintillion products Sony makes but it is still an important one.
I’m betting if Sony were winning this console war, we would have heard a great deal more. It’s not as if the Xbox 360 is the only product Microsoft makes and in its keynote, it made sure to talk Halo and Xbox Live. I’m not expecting the fist pumping that Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime is famous for, after all that company has a right to crow. The Wii is a Rocky Balboa level underdog story, by all means take your bow.
Sony’s keynote was so frustrating because this is the year Sony should be crowing about the PS3. GOW 3 is a console seller and the game that will make millions of us break down and buy the PS3. Uncharted 2 was one of the best reviewed games of the 2009 and has set a new standard for game presentation. The PS3 is at the price point the world was waiting for and in the cursory mention of the holiday sales, there was good news to report.
Sony’s games on display here include the aforementioned GOW 3 and Gran Turismo 5, it’s an impressive display. Hearing almost nothing about any of these games during the keynote speech has me worried though. At previous shows, Sony talked about 10-year console cycles and made a convincing case that this war isn’t over. In 2010, the company has the ammo to prove as much and I was intrigued they didn’t say so.
This is the time when all the things Sony has said at events in years past looks poised to come true. The near silence speaks volumes.
