First-person shooter fans’ wishlist for Bioshock 2 began with one word: Multiplayer.

Take-Two heard your cry and online multiplayer is getting so much attention, the company even has a whole design team working on competitive play. The world depicted in Bioshock 2 is unlike any other in gaming, so it is only fitting that the multiplayer is unique.

Players will be able to equip two weapons and two plasmid powers such as Telekinesis or Incinerate. The super powers can be used to activate vicious combos causing ridiculous amounts of damage. For example, combining water and electricity does large damage. The plasmid power Incinerate has a dramatic effect on a map with oil slicks on it.

After killing a foe, you have the option to perform research on his corpse. The research will give you a damage bonus against that particular player until they kill you. The drawback is that it takes a few seconds to do the research, leaving you vulnerable. One of the plasmids you can equip, however, allows for much quicker research. If you’re primarily concerned with the single player experience, there are some treats for you in multiplayer. Playing online can unlock audio diaries that reveal more of Rapture’s colorful history.

Perhaps the most powerful weapon one can get their hands on is the Big Daddy suit. You won’t have access to plasmids as a Big Daddy, but you have a cannon with unlimited ammo and the raw power the armor provides. Rapture looks to be a fun place to explore, and then tear to smithereens. Although the game takes place 10 years after the events of the original, Bioshock 2 ‘s multiplayer is a prequel played during Rapture’s Civil War, so parts of the city haven’t been destroyed yet.

That’s your job, spunky.

You can get to mass underwater destruction February 9, 2009 when Bioshock 2 hits on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.

  1. It's not a prequel, not at all. It's set 10 years after the Bioshock 1. Wow.

  2. My bad, I just read that the multiplayer is set one year before bioshock 1 and since this article is about the multiplayer, I'm dumb.

  3. It's OK, Lou. I don't know of anyone that's done multiplayer this way, so it's confusing.
