r4 chipAs further proof that the game industry is not playing around when it comes to piracy, United Kingdom resident Yun Can Meng has been sentenced to 12 months in prison.

Meng plead guilty to illegally importing R4 game copier cards. How many? Try 26,500 on for size. The cards allow the use of pirated content on the Nintendo DS.

This bust was a combined effort of The Entertainment and Leisure Software Association’s Crime Unit, Hull City Council Trading Standards Department and the Humberside Police force. ELSPA Director Michael Rallinson had this to say in a statement the group released:

Our crime unit is pleased with the outcome of this trial and pleased to see the Court of Appeal’s copyright judgment is being robustly enforced. Intellectual property [IP] theft is an important issue for the country’s videogames industry, as is protecting it.

This is the second noteworthy arrest on the R4 front in the past few months. November 2009 a mother and son were arrested for piracy in Osaka, Japan.
