New Super Mario Bros. Wii continues to prove just how successful Nintendo can be when it wants to. Nikkei Net is reporting the latest sale figure for the game, and has announced that it has sold over 10 million copies worldwide since it was released in November, 2009 in North America, Europe and Australia and and December 2009 in Japan. Pretty admirable figure for a game that’s been out for almost three months.
According to the Nikkei Net story, around 4.5 million copies of New Super Mario Bros. Wii were bought by North Americans. Japanese and Europeans each bought around 3 million copies of the games. Nikkei didn’t mention anything about the estimated Australian sales figures for the game. Somehow I’d have thought the sales figure for Japan would have been a bit larger, but still, it’s only been three months. I’m sure by the end of 2010 the figures will be about even for all regions.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii still has some catching up to do if it is to become number one in terms of copies sold. As PC World mentions, over 24 million copies of Wii Play have been sold worldwide. That’s because everybody buys Wii Play! Not for the game though, but because for $49.99 you get an extra remote and a game. Who’d buy a $39.99 remote when for $10 more you can get a mini-game collection with a remote? Nobody!
