The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) was one of the first major organizations to give recognition to video games as serious forms of entertainment. Since 2005 it has included a category for video games along with its usual awards for films and television.
In what is probably no surprise to anyone, Modern Warfare 2 and Uncharted 2 are at the top of the nominations for the 2010 Video Games Awards.
Uncharted 2 was nominated for 9 awards in categories including Action, Artistic Achievement, Story, Original Score and Best Game.
Modern Warfare 2 received 8 nominations for Action, Use of Audio, Artistic Achievement, Gameplay and Best Game among others.
Uncharted 2 and MW 2 may have been obvious candidates for nominations but there are some surprises this year. Flower, an innovative game where players control a flower petal as it blows with the wind, was nominated for Artistic Achievement and Use of Audio.
In another surprise, FIFA 10 got nominated in the Best Game category along with, again, MW2 and Uncharted 2. I’m not saying FIFA isn’t a good game but in my opinion it isn’t even in the same neighborhood as the rest of the nominees in terms of art, story or even score. I’m not sure if it’s got a real chance, but let’s wait and see what the BAFTA thinks.
This year’s video game awards will be held Friday, March 19, 2010.
