Dragon Quest IX Sentinel of the Starry Skies ドラゴンクエストIX 星空の守り人Nintendo continues to delight fans with it’s announcements today, and the latest is going to make Square Enix fans squeal with joy as well. It turns out Nintendo will be responsible for publishing the DS RPG Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies in North America. The official announcement states that it will be working with Square Enix to bring the game to the US. This is quite a surprise, as the Dragon Quest series is Square Enix property, and Square Enix published the game in Japan when it was released there on July 11, 2009. You’d think Square Enix would accept sole responsibility for the task.

A definite release date hasn’t been announced yet for the game, but IGN is reporting a Summer 2010 release date. That sounds great to me! As long as it gives us all a chance to recover from the soon to be legendary video game flood of March, 2010, it’ll be fine.

I wonder if this news will have any effect on the European release. Remember, back in December, 2009, Square Enix trademarked Dragon Quest IX: Sentinel of the Starry Skies there. Perhaps Square Enix and Nintendo will team up for that release as well.

I bet Nintendo saw just how phenomenal the game was doing overseas and figured it had to get in on that! Dragon Quest IX received a perfect 40/40 score when reviewed by Famitsu, and millions of copies have been sold in Japan.
