Heavy Rain could become a movie

A number of PS3 owners may currently be unable to play Heavy Rain due to the PlayStation Network problems or multiple game glitches, but there could be hope. Should the worst happen and these people be unable to finish Heavy Rain, they might one day still be able to experience it. New Line Cinema now holds the rights to Heavy Rain.

SuperAnnuation first discovered the filing, which shows the agreement made between QuanticDream, the developers behind Heavy Rain and New Line Productions, which is New Line Cinema. This doesn’t guarantee that we’ll all one day be seeing a Heavy Rain movie, unfortunately. (Keep praying for patches and solutions, PS3 owners!) It just means that there is a distinct possibility that, one day, New Line Cinema will decide to use those rights to create a movie based on the events in the game.

I’m torn on the revelation. While a movie adaptation of Heavy Rain would be intriguing to watch, and possibly a wonderful film in the right hands, I also don’t think a movie could do it justice. Heavy Rain is already so movie-like, and it seems like forcing people to watch a film based on it, that focuses on certain characters and doesn’t take into account the various branching options available in the original game, would go against everything the game actually stood for and represented. On the other hand, I don’t own a PS3 and I’d love the chance to actually see a movie based on the game, so I could sort-of experience the movie. Plus, a game like Heavy Rain would lend itself better to a movie than something like Street Fighter or Bloodrayne.

I guess we’ll all just have to wait and see what happens. Maybe in 2012 or 2013 we’ll be sitting around, raving about Heavy Rain the movie.
