Oghren from Dragon Age

You know how back when the expansion to the much-beloved Dragon Age: Origins was first announced, BioWare stated that a “player-favorite” would be returning to the party? Yeah, somehow, they seem to have gotten this one all wrong.

Welcome back Oghren, folks.

You remember Oghren, don’t you? He’s the little drunken dwarf berserker from Orzammar. The lovable scamp that is literally forced down your throat during the dwarven section of the main quest. Apparently, since he fought with the Grey Warden and helped halt the fifth Blight, he’s made somewhat of a name for himself. He settled down, had a kid, but that old berserker instinct couldn’t be settled forever. So, he’s back in the saddle again, as it were, and ready to stomp on some Darkspawn faces.

Of course, all of the other characters from the original title, such as Sten, Shale and Alistair, were busy at the time with their own things and just weren’t available to be in the expansion. Clearly, Oghren, otherwise known as The Guy Who Never Left Camp in my game, was the best choice. Of course, they did say “a player-favorite” so I’m sure someone out there actually used him.

In a way, it’s like one of those franchises that never stops spinning out sequels and, slowly but surely, the only people left from the original are the truly superfluous ones.

Dragon Age is jumping the shark ahead of time by including Oghren. Just to be safe.

Let’s hope BioWare expands on the character in Dragon Age: Awakening or he might once again be left behind.
