Heavy Rain Ethan

Warning: This post contains spoilers to Heavy Rain. Do not read unless you’ve completed the game, or if you plan on seeing every possible scenario.

I recently played through Heavy Rain for the first time. I enjoyed it so much, I managed to get through it in less than one day. But there are some instances while playing where I found myself thinking,” How is that possible?” Even though Heavy Rain has a great story and really does feel like an interactive movie in hindsight, it has some large plot holes.

Here are some situations I need some clarity on. If you know of a good explanation, feel free to post them in the comments.

In most of the game Ethan is suspected of being the Origami Killer. We’re led to believe this is a possibility because Ethan would black out and would find himself in the middle of the street holding a folded origami figure. Combine this with the severe psychological trauma he’s going through after losing his son Jason, and you’ve got a textbook case of a homicidal maniac. Later on we find out that Scott Shelby the private investigator is the real killer. So how in the world did Ethan get those origami figures in his hand? He confessed he didn’t know anything about origami.

There’s also a part in my story where Ethan’s ex wife goes to the police as says she thinks Ethan may be the killer. She said this because she would see him behaving strangely. She also found an origami figure on him. She then told the police she saw the story of another victim the next day. The confusing part to this story lies in the patterns of the killer himself. The kids weren’t murdered instantly. They were always drowned after being trapped for days in rising rain water. Were we to believe Ethan blacks out for days at a time? The cops would have known better.

Finally there was a scene where Shelby and Lauren are trapped in a car underwater. Shelby’s hands are tied the steering wheel and Lauren’s hands are tied to the door. In one scenario, Shelby has to free himself before getting to Lauren. I replayed this scene and decided to free Lauren first. This time Shelby managed to free Lauren, kick out the car’s window and swim to the shore without untying his own hands.

Everyone put on your ARI sunglasses and let’s figure all this out together.
