Nudity and sexual themes in general are among the most heavily censored subjects but, despite this trend, some developers have managed to find tasteful ways to include them into their stories. With this idea in mind, 2K Games has partnered with Playboy Magazine for its upcoming game, Mafia II.
Mafia II will recreate the world of organized crime during the late ’40s and the ’50s in the US. Players will control Vito who will get involved in various criminal activities reminiscent of a Grand Theft Auto game.
Among other activities, players will be able to collect issues of Playboy Magazine. These will be actual magazines published during the time period featuring the actual covers and centerfolds. Representatives from Playboy said that it was during those times that the magazine gained popularity and that its style is reflected by some of the characters in the game.
I think it is a good move by 2K to include the magazine in the game. Even though many will probably see it as fan service, the magazine is undeniably a cultural icon and adds a touch of realism. Prominent crime figures from that period moved in the upper social circles, just as many of the models and celebrities featured in the magazine so I guess it is a good match.
Mafia II is slated for the third quarter of 2010. It will be available for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
