It’s your friendly annual reminder to go out and visit your friendly neighborhood comic shop and pick up some free comics.
Free Comic Book Day is an annual event that takes place the first Saturday in May (May 1, 2010) to help generate – or regenerate – interest in comic books.
A lot of the big comic companies release titles for the day and, depending on your shop, you can often find a few decent indies as well. Some even dump out those quarter boxes simply to get them out of the store.
Don’t think that all of the comics in the shops are free, though, as many people do. The FCBD titles are from a specific list of comics that stores purchase (yep, they have to buy them) and provide. Most stores have limits on what you can take from the FCBD selection and I find it a good and polite practice to buy at least one comic from each store I visit. Otherwise the clerks and mangers will get cranky and the store might not partake in FCDB next year. Be sure to check out the other comics available. Who knows, you might find something exciting and new.
Notable titles this year include Iron Man, Shrek, Toy Story, War of the Supermen #0, Sonic the Hedgehog (the only noticeably game-related title), Fearless Dawn and Irredeemable #1. I’m guessing the most in demand issue this year will be Green Hornet #1.
Below is a complete list of offering from the FCBD site (as of today). Remember that not all stores buy into both the Gold and the Silver level of the program and supplies are limited.

Do check the FCBD site for participating stores since some won’t take part in the event since it can be quite a hassle.
