After unpacking my groceries a few days ago, I went to prep a banana for consumption. I peeled off the stickers and noticed that there was a cute little monkey on the sticker instead of the usual “Chiquita” lady logo.
I checked the other bananas and there was one with a friggin’ MonkeyBall logo on it. Super MonkeyBall: Step & Roll for Wii to be precise.
Sure, the monkey makes sense but a Nintendo game tie-in? Where will the marketing end!? OK, so it’s sly, it’s subtle and it’s actually related (and for a healthy food item). Damn you, Sega (and Nintendo)
If you head over to the Chiquita banana web site (ChiquitaBananas.com) and scroll down to the bottom, you’ll notice both a Wii and a Sega logo that links to the game’s site. Yep, Nintendo has not only gone fruity but the fruit has gone Nintendo-y.
Of course, the promotion doesn’t end there. There is also a giveaway – the Super MonkeyBall Sweepstakes - you can enter to win a prize package consisting of a 50 in HDTV, a Wii console, Balance Board (includes Wii Fit Plus), Super Monkey Ball Step & Roll , a couch, 4 family room gaming chairs, 4 Chiquita sports totes totes, T-shirts, Sports Bottles and, of course, a banana hanger. The runners-up prizes include gift baskets and/or Super Monkey Ball Step & Roll games.
And I mean that literally.
