What do you get when you mix reality, cartoons, pointless vulgarity and the big screen? Why, the new Drawn Together movie of course.
Drawn Together Movie: The Movie is the brand new direct-to-DVD movie based on the TV show on Comedy Central. It has all the characters of the original series with much more pointless vulgarity. In fact, you now hear all the profanity and all the blurred out sex you couldn’t see on TV. It’s good to be a DVD.
The Drawn Together crew wake up to discover that their precious TV show has been canceled and a man with a vendetta is out trying to erase them all with his I.S.R.A.E.L robot. It’s up to them to escape the robot and try to get their show back on the air.
Censors Need Not Apply
The crew finds out in this movie (finally) that they are not really the real deal but, in fact, cheap knockoff cartoon characters that are based on the real thing. Despite hearing the awful truth, the crew decides to save themselves by getting their show back on the air. They find out that their show was replaced by an ever more vulgar show (which I can’t name here for obvious reasons). The crew must now travel to meet the Point Wizard and get a point for their show.
The movie is just like the series, except that they don’t have to censor anything, which means you really see a lot of things you which you didn’t see before. A lot of the scenes were very graphic and downright pornographic. This is not a movie for the kiddies. In fact it’s not really appropriate for anyone.
Along with random acts of crudeness, there are also plenty of humor and pop references, including a great Goonies reference at the end. There were tons of jokes in the movie but I found myself laughing most of the time because the scenes were just so outrageous.
They combined a couple different animation styles as well. For instance, they used the classic 2D style we are used to and included some of the stop motion, cutout animation indicative of South Park.
One of the special features of the show is that there are 3D scenes. Unfortunately, due to Comedy Central being cheap (as the movie said), 3D glasses were not included. So instead they gave you a tutorial about how to make your own. All you need is red and blue cellophane and some scissors. I was not able to see the 3D scenes because I don’t have any of the materials, but just seeing them without the glasses told me that it would be gross and very in your face.
Get To the Point
Maybe I am sounding like an old women here but I thought there was a tad bit too much grossness going on. Aside from actual porn in cartoon form, there were also body parts being hacked off, things being blown up and so on. I can handle only so much of that before I just have too look away. I understand that is the point of the show and since it’s the movie, you have to go all out, but it just seemed a bit extreme.
I think a movie shouldn’t try so hard to be funny by being as crude as possible. Like I said there were some good jokes and gags in the movie, but it was just a bit off the wall. To me it seemed like they were going more for a porno then a cartoon about reality TV. One scene that I thought was hilarious, however, is when they are trying to escape from a carriage they were trapped in and trying not to drown. They decide to listen to the commentary from the creators to see how they said the crew escapes. They basically poke fun at the fact that commentaries are typically boring and wonder why would anyone actually want to listen to them.
However, if you are a fan of the Drawn Together show, and shows like South Park that are just going for the extreme, then you will probably greatly enjoy this movie. I guess I like my humor to have more of a point to it.
Even Reality Shows Have a Happy Ending
This may be the worst movie ever in existence but, then again, that is the point of the movie. No one is going to buy this movie for its enthralling plot line and evolving characters. So if you are into pointless vulgarity and random acts of violence, then this is the movie for you. If you are not into that and care more about content and humor that has a point to it, then avoid this movie like the plague.
Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
