The Xbox 360 is probably the least reliable console to date. Despite my own pleasant experience, millions of consumers have suffered from the infamous red ring of death hardware failure. Those who managed to escape the rings were either incredibly lucky or got the E-74 error instead. Though countless people have forgiven Microsoft and looked the other way, South African retailers are putting their foot down.
A report from MCV says many retailers in South Africa are refusing to stock Xbox 360′s. They cite the high failure rates as the primary reason why South Africa isn’t supporting the console. At the same time, PS2 sales continue to do well in that territory. Quinton Eavie, director for Apex Interactive also points out how well the Wii is doing. On the other hand DS Lite sales haven’t been doing as well. Eavie did not mention how the PS3 is selling in the area.
The failure rate of Xbox 360′s isn’t as high as it used to be ever since Microsoft introduced the Jasper chipset into its consoles. However a survey taken by No Fuss Reviews earlier this year indicates the Xbox 360 still has a 42% failure rate. Out of 500,000 persons, 55% of them said they needed to have their Xbox repaired more than once.
