In the era of CSI, NCIS and a couple million “true crime” shows on cable, it’s no shock that Heavy Rain’s search for the Origami Killer has taken its first steps towards becoming a movie.
Unique Features, a venture started by former New Line Cinema executives Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne, won an auction for the film rights to the PlayStation 3 crime hit. Game industry insiders are already drawing comparisons between Heavy Rain and the movie Seven, a thriller that was a huge hit for New Line Cinema.
This development is tinged with a little irony. The most common complaint of those unimpressed with Heavy Rain is that it was more akin to an interactive movie than an actual video game. That hasn’t stopped it from selling about 1 million units since February, during a time when high profile software and a price cut have boosted PS3 buzz and sales.
As anyone familiar with Hollywood workings can tell you, just because film rights exist doesn’t mean a movie will ever happen. The idea of a Halo movie has been kicked around for years. These days it looks about as likely to ever hit cinemas as Duke Nukem Forever is to grace game consoles.
