Risk: Factions

Or is that a rezomb?

I used to like board games and Risk looked like fun so I gave it a try. I started doing OK with my armies and conquering some countries but, after about four hours, I realized that it was going to take all day. So I quit.

I guess that was one of the reasons many people weren’t engaged with Risk and that is one of the things EA is trying to change with their upcoming video game, Risk: Factions.

EA has changed the rules a little by including objectives in each game. Once you have completed a certain number of objectives – for example, capturing a certain number of cities or barracks – you win. For fans of the original Risk and its long runs, there is also the option of playing with the classic rules.

Risk: Factions is also incorporating a little humor with the playable armies. You can choose between humans, cats, robots, zombies and a yet-to-be-revealed faction. The armies are evenly balanced and share the same abilities, but each one has its own comical animations and story lines.

EA is also changing the traditional world map for different scenarios. There are maps with different sizes and types of terrain and some of them will include environmental hazards such as volcanoes or dams.

EA is on the right track with these changes by making Risk more approachable and better suited for a video game. Online multiplayer sounds like fun and will surely be benefited with the new objectives system and terrain options.

Risk: Factions is coming to Xbox Live Arcade Summer 2010 (the exact release date is yet to be announced).
