Legendary Pictures, the film company that’s co-produced 300, Watchmen and The Dark Knight, has recently purchased the rights to create a movie based on Mass Effect (according to the Hollywood Reporter.)
Mark Protosevich, screenwriter for I Am Legend and the upcoming Thor (teased at the end of the credits of Iron Man 2), has been asked to write the screenplay. The Hollywood Reporter mentioned that the project will be produced by Avi and Ari Arad, and Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni. BioWare’s Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk and Casey Hudson will also act as executive producers on the film.
With the high caliber of people involved, one may conclude that this movie will be really cool and do marvelously. Mass Effect has such a rich universe of characters and engaging storyline.
How could you go wrong?!
Sadly, the average movie length of 100 minutes is not nearly enough time to explore every nuance the game has to offer. Furthermore, to appeal to the PG-13 crowd (which they’ll most likely do to attract a wider audience) it’s likely that characters will be dumbed down or omitted, and the story overly simplified. Let’s just hope that the Arads can deliver us a film the quality of Iron Man, not Ghost Rider.
On a different note, it would be great if they decide to use female Shepard instead of male Shepard as the protagonist. However, the box art does show a male Shepard, and with Lost having just ended, Matthew Fox is quite available.
