Thundercats logoWarner Bros. has joined forces with Bandai to resurrect (like Mumm-Ra) the Thundercats franchise.

Don’t lie, you know you’ve been waiting almost two decades for this.

Bandai will oversee the production of a new toy line based on the 1980s series. Meanwhile, WB is currently producing a new Thundercats animated series that will air on Cartoon Network, slated to debut sometime in 2011. There’s no word yet as to when the toys will be available. (Editor’s Note: I’m betting a game is not far behind as well.)

I’m curious to see how they’re going to revamp the franchise and yank it out of the ’80s. Will the adult Thundercats still wear those lame leotards? They should be upgraded to wear cool, dark-colored body armor, though I’m guessing that Cheetara will still look like she’s wearing nothing.

The most important question of all is on what scale of annoyance will they make Snarf? Will he be say, Orko annoying, or full-blown Jar Jar annoying?

With the success of the live-action Transformers films and (to a much smaller degree) the G.I. Joe film, it’s not surprising that companies are reviving classic ’80s cartoons. For example, Voltron (my favorite ’80s cartoon) is poised for a second coming as well, with a film and animated series planned for 2011.

  1. "lame leotards" Really? I hope they keep them. I've got a closet full of similar outfits waiting for it to come back into fashion.
