If you are playing the EA Sports Active games on your Wii, you may be satisfying the American College of Sports Medicine‘s (ACSM) guidelines for an active lifestyle.

A study released on June 2, 2010, conducted by Dr. John Porcari of the University of Wisconsin concluded that these games passed the fitness guidelines of ACSM.

ACSM recommends that individuals get 30 minutes of moderate intensity activity at least 5 days each week. This study tested 16 individuals between the ages of 25 and 45 with the pre-set workouts Afterburner and Legs and Lungs. In both groups, the ACSM guidelines to maintain health and help with weight control were satisfied.

If you are not familiar with EA Sports Active, there is a lot of exciting stuff happening. With the personal trainer, you can work on cardiovascular strength and resistance training (with rubber resistance bands). With the trainer you can perform exercises such as upright rows, tricep kickbacks, bicep curls, lunges and squats.

In More Workouts, you get new abdominal workouts, a 6 week challenge and a Best Life Book by Bob Greene, among other features.

These games differ from the Wii Fit gamesmany of you might have tried. With the Sports Active, the player uses rubber resistance bands to challenge the muscles in the same way free weights do. The games also keep track of the player’s form to help prevent injury.

You can get EA Sports Active games for both Wii and PS3. So, see, no more excuses.
