Kirby's Epic Yarn E3

You’ve gotta hand it to a developer if they create a game that looks so adorable it makes you want to pick it up and cuddle it to pieces. Nintendo’s Kirby’s Epic Yarn is such a game.

The game is a side-scrolling, 2D platformer and seems to be most fun when played with a friend. You work together yet against each other, like in New Super Mario Bros Wii. For example, Kirby can throw his buddy someplace where neither can reach on his own and say, get some bonus items. At the same time, if you both see an item, you can prevent the other player from taking it by grabbing him/her and tossing him away from it, maybe even off a cliff.

Kirby’s Epic Yarn is hands-down one of the cutest games I saw on E3 2010. The pretty, pastel-y color template makes you feel like you’re playing the game on a baby’s blanket. Like the first time I heard about LittleBigPlanet, I had an overwhelming urge to hug Kirby’s Epic Yarn and pinch its cheeks. In fact, a lot about the art design reminds me of LBP. Kirby, his friend, and all enemies in the game are made out of yarn. Kirby is literally represented as an outline of pink yarn while his friend is made of blue yarn. The environment is made of yarn, felt, or stitched cloth, all bathed in Easter-y pastel colors.

As an outline of pink yarn, Kirby can morph into various shapes. For example, he can turn into a parachute or a car. Kirby can use part of himself as a lasso to whip and enemies, causing them to unravel. He can use this same lasso ability as a grappling hook. I noticed in the demo that Kirby didn’t seem to have his classic ability to inhale enemies, which is kind of odd. Perhaps Nintendo will reveal this feature at a later date.

Kirby’s Epic Yarn is slated for a 2011 release.

  1. If wanting to hug Kirby's Epic Yarn is wrong, I don't want to be right.
