Perhaps Australia’s controversial Ratings Classification Board is lightening up a bit. Capcom’s zombie horror sequel Dead Rising 2 got an MA 15+ rating. That carries some warnings about its content but does allow it to be sold. This is a far cry from the events in 2009 that saw Left 4 Dead 2 refused classification twice. That game was finally released in an extremely toned down version removing much of the violence and things that made it Left 4 Dead 2
Though Dead Rising 2 has a great deal in common with Left 4 Dead 2, it earned the MA 15+ rating with warnings regarding strong horror violence as well as blood and gore and sexual references. While Capcom is Dead Rising 2′s publisher, THQ will distribute the game in Australia. In an interview with Gamespot, THQ said it made no changes to the game.
So what is the difference between two “kill hordes of zombie” games that made one unacceptable and the other A-OK? The first Dead Rising displays a little more of a sense of humor, allowing you to slay zombies with weapons such as Mega Man’s trademark weapon. The second features more humorous weapon combos such as a boat paddle with a chainsaw on either end.
When it smacked down Left 4 Dead 2, the Classification Board talked about the game’s realistic violence. A note to future designers trying to get a violent game onto Australian shelves, add paddlesaws and laser beams. You should be in good shape then. Dead Rising 2 is slated for a September 28, 2010 release on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 with a PC version coming as well.
