It’s almost time to put those 3D televisions you haven’t purchased yet to good use. A PS3 firmware update in September will grant the console with 3D Blu-ray functionality. The PS3 already supports 3D gaming due to a previous firmware update last June. That’s not all though. Sony has a few extra 3D tricks up its sleeve.

In addition to 3D Blu-ray support, Sony will also give the PS3 the capability to show 3D photo and 3D YouTube videos. September is also the month when Sony will begin selling the Cyber-shot DSC-TX9 and DSC-WX5, Sony’s new line of 3D cameras. There aren’t too many 3D Blu-ray movies available right now, but Sony is sure to release films from its studios in the new format.

3D supporters and skeptics are still duking it out over the need for 3D. Ubisoft thinks every home will have 3D televisions in three years. It also believes the price of 3D televisions and 3D Blu-ray players will decrease to a more reasonable level this holiday season. On the flip side, a UK charity is claiming 12% of its population can’t even see 3D content. It’s an uphill battle battle for sure, but Sony is playing to win.
