OnLive has the technology that could be a very important part in the future of gaming. The trick is keeping OnLive up to date with current gaming trends. One of OnLive’s biggest limitations is the lack of Wi-Fi support. However this issue has been addressed and will be fixed by the Fall. But with Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft pushing motion controls and 3D gaming, it becomes essential for OnLive to make itself relevant in the face of an evolving industry. Apparently OnLive has already prepared itself for this situation.
OnLive’s CEO Steve Perlman told CNET OnLive is already capable of providing both motion controls and 3D gaming to gamers from the cloud.
“It does support motion control. It supports pretty much any USB PC controller,” said Perlman. “It also can take an input from a video camera for video conferencing. And of course you can have processing in that camera which could go and interpret that motion.”
Perlman was then asked if 3D is possible as well.
“Yes, if you have a 3D TV and glasses. It will initially be limited by publishers providing us with 3D games, but over time, more games will be 3D,” said Perlman.
OnLive presents itself as a totally open experience. Perlman wants to work with other companies to the benefit of gamers. For example, OnLive is capable is linking multiplayer games across multiple platforms. For example, OnLive users are currently in multiplayer sessions with beta testers playing on the iPhone and iPad. It’s up to whether companies such as Microsoft and Sony and other publishers to decide if it wants to share its space with OnLive.
