Thor video game logoWhenever there’s a comic book movie, a video game based on it is sure to follow. Such can be said for the upcoming Thor motion picture. Sega has announced that they’re developing Thor: The Video Game for all five major gaming platforms: the Wii, Xbox 360, PS3, PSP, and DS. The game is scheduled to come out in 2011, most likely to coincide with the movie’s release date (still to be determined).

Thor: The Video Game will be a third-person adventure game in which the flaxen-haired Norse god fights his way through various environments such as fire and ice worlds to save Asgard. Players will encounter familiar enemies from the comic books such as Ulik, Ymir, and Surtur. Thor can earn Valor points, which you can spend on new powers, abilities, and weapon upgrades.

The game will be developed with the help of Eisner Award-winning Matt Fraction, lead Thor comic book author. He’s the story consultant.

Gameplay will differ on the different versions of the game, depending on the platform. The Wii version will use the Wiimote and Nunchuck, clearly to incorporate some motion-based gameplay, while the DS version will be a 2D side-scroller. The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions will feature your standard, third-person action gameplay with fancy 3D cinematics. Even the graphics will be different across the consoles, as the PSP and Wii versions will have a “comic book” style of design.
