Alice is returning to Wonderland, and I’m not talking about the Disney Alice in Wonderland. I’m talking about Alice: Madness Returns, the sequel to the 2000 Windows PC game American McGee’s Alice. It’s taken ten years, but now PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 owners will be able to see what’s happened to Alice and if she ever recovered.
Appropriately enough, the events in Alice: Madness Returns take place 10 years after the original game. Alice is finally out of Rutledge Asylum, though she isn’t quite sane yet. She’s living in London now, being watched over by a psychiatrist. She’s still experiencing hallucinations and attempting to figure out what happened to her family and her past life. So she does the only thing she can do, she returns to Wonderland. Once again, Alice’s absence has caused Wonderland to experience some dark and unpleasant changes, and she will have to battle her way through to make things right.
The game should be in good hands, since American McGee’s Grimm developers Spicy Horse are developing Alice: Madness Returns for EA. We’ll see for ourselves in 2011, when the game is released.
