After months of teasing the four separate universes that we’ll play in, Activision has revealed the fourth and final universe from Spider-Man:Shattered Dimensions. It is the “Ultimate” Universe from Marvel’s popular Ultimate line of books. The Ultimate books were designed to allow new readers to pick up Marvel titles without getting bogged down by years of history. Thus Ultimate Spider-Man and his Amazing counterpart, on the surface, are not all that different.
The announcement is sure to disappoint some who were pulling for a radically different Spidey universe. I was hoping for Marvel Zombies, myself. Developer Beenox has promised that the four different Spider-Man will play in radically different ways. The Ultimate Spider-Man depicted here is wearing the black alien symbiote costume made famous in the comics and the Spider-Man 3 film.
The alien symbiote suit makes Spidey significantly stronger and amplifies the user’s rage. So Ultimate Spider-Man will likely not be a hero to mess with. This joins previously revealed universes Amazing (the Spidey most of us are familiar with) Noir (Spidey set during the Great Depression) and Spider-Man 2099 (set in the year, well, 2099).
Spider-Man Shattered Dimensions is slated for a September 7, 2010 release on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii.
