We know it’s very unusual for a PSN game to be pre-ordered. Steam lets you pre-load some of its games before release, but that’s just really meant to help you avoid congestion for when everyone starts downloading at the same time. Ubisoft on the other hand wants you to pre-order Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game for PSN. This is probably the strangest concept we’ve ever heard.
Pre-ordering a digital game from PSN seems very odd. There’s no way it can ever be sold out and it’s not like you can download it ahead of time. But if that’s the way the wind is blowing these days, so be it. There’s a plus side to Ubisoft’s request. Pre-ordering Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game will net you a Sex Bob-omb t-shirt for your avatar in PlayStation Home. Ubisoft lists the game for $9.99 with a release date of August 10, 2010.
Regardless of how it seems on the surface, PlayStation Home is actually very successful. Numerous developers have set up special Home spaces that act as virtual advertisements for its products. Merchandise from the various stores in Home has turned out to be lucrative as well, with nearly every item turning a profit.
I suppose there’s no harm in pre-ordering Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game if you were already planning to buy it on release day. Be it a Home item or not, getting something free is never a bad thing.
