Disney logoWith the recent increase in popularity of casual games, especially in social media sites such as Facebook, more and more companies are showing interest in this new segment. The big entertainment companies are aware of this new market and Disney, being among the giants in the industry, is making its move by going into talks to buy casual games company, Playdom.

Disney is following a strategy of providing content for as many media outlets as possible so, naturally, the casual games market is one of its biggest targets. By relying on its brands, which include some of the most popular and well known characters and stories, Disney is in a great position to expand into this relatively new market. Disney already has a partnership with the company to develop social games for their ESPN division, so the acquisition talks really show Disney’s attention to the social gaming and more importantly, the opportunity for revenue it offers.

Both companies are still in talks about the final amount but, when the dust settles, Disney will be on its way to becoming an entertainment empire and possibly recover the top spot it once held.
