GameStop’s made a new acquisition, and this time it’s somewhat unexpected. You may recall how it seemed like the company wanted to start getting into free, browser-based games. The GameStop site does have that whole Free2Play section, with games like Legends of Zork and Gangsta’ Zombies. Now, GameStop’s hoping to expand it’s influence with Kongregate.
Kongregate is a free, online game site filled with browser-based, Flash games made by Kongregate users. A unique aspect is that, after playing a game there, you may find yourself earning achievement badges and acquiring a high score. You can also chat with other Kongregate members, rate and review the games available, take part in events and acquire Kreds with real cash to make games easier or make donations to game creators. It’s been around since 2007 and the site has grown to include over 30,000 free games.
Jim Greer, CEO of Kongregate, made an announcement today (July 27, 2010) that seems to suggest that not much will change now that GameStop’s in charge. The Kongregate staff will stay the same and games will remain free, for example. On the contrary, it almost seems like things may get better, since Kongregate and GameStop are trying to work to reward Kongregate players actual, real reward items. Greer mentioned that GameStop and Kongregate are investigating linking the Kongregate Points System with GameStop’s PowerUp Rewards.
