Disney isn’t wasting any time making use of its newly acquired property. Disney purchased Playdom last month for $563 million but will pay an additional $200 million based on Playdom’s future financial success. Playdom is currently starting its first project based in the Marvel Universe which is considered to be a social game.
Disney’s president and CEO Bob Iger feels capitalizing on the gaming aspect of social media could be a very lucrative opportunity for Disney. According to Iger, there are over 50 million users that belong to Facebook groups of various Disney owned properties such as ABC and ESPN. When Disney adds on another estimated 40 million Facebook users that play games developed by Playdom, it has the potential of reaching 90 million users on Facebook and MySpace.
Iger did not provide a release window for the upcoming Marvel game. As far as consoles are concerned, there is a deal in place for a new Marvel game to go along with the previous agreements set in place before Disney purchased Marvel.
