Spoiler Alert: Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story

There are times where a game is released where you really want to know what happened but you either can’t or don’t want to buy or play it. To help you out, Gamertell offers Spoiler Alert. We’ll play the games and tell you what happened so you don’t have to spend, or waste, your time on it. This week, we’re looking at Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story, the DS RPG from Nintendo. Prepare to be spoiled.

Okay, so Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story starts out with all the toads succumbing to a weird illness called the blorbs, which causes them to swell up into huge, round Toads, unable to really move. Princess Peach, Starlow the star sprite, Mario, Luigi and a bunch of toads are meeting trying to decide what to do. Bowser busts in to cause trouble, gets beat up and sent to Dimple Wood. There Fawful (in disguise) gives him a mushroom to eat that’s really a vacuum mushroom. Fawful makes Bowser go back to the mushroom kingdom and inhale everyone in the conference room. It turns out Fawful also created the mushrooms which turned Toads into blorbs.

For much of the story, Mario, Luigi and Bowser are working together, albiet unknowingly on Bowser’s part. Fawful wants Bowser’s castle and the mushroom kingdom. So while Bowser’s trying to reclaim his castle in the real world, Mario, Luigi and Starlow are inside Bowser’s body exploring, trying to find missing Toads who were sucked up and searching for Princess Peach. The brothers also can end up helping Bowser in the real world by performing actions in his body.

Bowser ends up getting back in his castle, and defeating Fawful’s minion, Midbus. About the same time, Mario and Luigi find Princess Peach and rescue her from Kretins. She tells them that Fawful is after the Dark Star artifact below Toad Town. Unfortunately, Fawful then removes Princess Peach from Bowser and kidnaps her.

Fawful and Midbus then end up sending Bowser out of the castle, and he starts going through underground tunnels to reach the Toad Town tunnels. He gets knocked out, which allows Mario, Luigi and Starlow to find an exit out of his body and a way back to the real world. They go to get the Dark Star, but Fawful already got it and has taken it to Princess’ Peach’s castle. Mario, Luigi and Starlow then have to get Star Cures to get inside. Of course, Bowser knows where they are now and overhears, and decides to go get the Star Cures too. Mario, Luigi and Starlow get the first Star Cure from Durmite inside of Bowser, Bowser gets the second one from the vault in his castle, which he swallows so Mario, Luigi and Starlow get it, and Mario and Luigi get the last Star Cure from Chakron.

The Star Cures are turned into the Miracle Cure, which cures all blorb-infected Toads and allows Mario, Luigi and Starlow to get into Princess Peach’s castle. They defeat a boss which ends up doing enough damage to free Bowser, who was trapped in the vault after getting the Star Cure, and he heads to Princess Peach’s castle as well. Mario and Luigi head inside Bowser again.

Bowser then ends up getting to Princess Peach’s castle, and attacks Fawful while he’s absorbing the Dark Star’s power. The Dark Star then gets inside Bowser, stealing his DNA while Mario and Luigi attack it. Bowser chases after Fawful and defeats his Dark Fawful self. After he does, the Dark Fawful essense combines with the Dark Star that escaped inside Bowser and combine to form Dark Bowser. A giant battle then ensues, prior to which Starlow tells Bowser the truth – that she, Mario and Luigi have been inside him all that time and will help. He doesn’t hear though, and fights Dark Bowser and inhales Dark Fawful when he reappears to revive Dark Bowser. Mario and Luigi then defeat Dark Fawful and the Dark Star and Bowser finishes off Dark Bowser. Dark Fawful then explodes and all Mario, Luigi, Starlow and all the toads inside Bowser pop out.

The game ends with Bowser back in his castle recuperating, his minions apologizing for their actions while brainwashed. Starlow comes by to check on him, bring him a present and see if he’s going to come and attack again. He tells her to leave and says he’s focusing on fixing what Fawful did to his castle at the moment. After everyone leaves him alone, Bowser opens the box and finds a cake with Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach and his face on it, to thank him for his help in defeating Fawful.
