In a surprise announcement from Gamescom 2010, EA has revealed that Mass Effect isn’t just a Xbox 360 and PC game anymore. In January 2011, Mass Effect 2 will be released on the PS3. Even better – it won’t be the same version of Mass Effect 2 that Xbox 360 and PC owners got. EA’s confirmed that BioWare’s putting a little extra love and bonus content into the PS3 edition.
No details have been revealed about that bonus content yet. Perhaps PS3 owners will get some of the Xbox 360 and PC versions’ DLC for free. Maybe there’ll be entirely new characters and situations crafted for the PS3 release. We probably won’t know until the release date draws nearer. If it is entirely new, exclusive content, then I’m sure we’ll hear a lot of outrage from existing Mass Effect 2 owners.
Of course, this isn’t all that surprising a move. The PS3 often gets slightly updated and enhanced versions of already released RPGs. Namco Bandai did it with Tales of Vesperia (originally on the Xbox 360) and Tales of Graces (originally a Wii exclusive) and Square Enix did that with Star Ocean: The Last Hope International, an enhanced PS3 release of the Xbox 360′s Star Ocean: The Last Hope.
