PC game publisher Matrix Games has announced the late 2010 release of Panzer Command: Ostfront, the latest in the Panzer Command series of war games. This incredibly flexible series of 3D turn-based games based on World War II tank battles handles operations from the smallest of scales up to full warfare campaigns.
Ostfront will be available free to owners of Panzer Command: Kharkov, as it replaces that and Panzer Command: Winterstorm, including the content of both as well as new battles and many bug fixes and rules tweaks.
As any speaker of German might guess, Ostfront will focus on the Eastern front, allowing players to act as company commander on either the Soviet or German side, attempting to achieve victory while preserving men and equipment as much as possible. This ultimate tank combat game will feature more than 60 scenarios and 10 full campaigns, along with random battles and campaigns for the serious player.
If that’s not enough, the game allows you to create your own or modify the pre-set scenarios and there is a built-in map maker to allow aficionados to create their own realistic 3D maps.
Decades ago, serious war games like this were all but inaccessible to the public, requiring mastery of thick rulebooks and, even more importantly, a spare two car garage (or basement) available for the weeks or even months, it might take to actually finish a game. It’s neat how computers not only open up this genre to anyone with a few bucks, as they take up less space and are capable of handling the dizzying array of rules necessary for a really good simulation.
