new mk logoHector Sanchez, Mortal Kombat producer, believes the long-discussed battle between that series and Capcom’s Street Fighter is going to happen. Sanchez even went so far as to tell NowGamer he believes it is “inevitable.”

Sanchez also mentioned that MK creator Ed Boon pitched the idea more than 10 years ago. Capcom’s Street Fighter’s World Warriors have taken on Marvel Comics characters, fighters from the rival SNK company and will soon cross over with Namco’s Tekken.

MK recently battled the DC Universe in an unexpected crossover but the only place MK and SF have thrown down so far is in the now discontinued Epic Battles card game. Sanchez also mentioned that the upcoming Mortal Kombat title planned for 2011 will be the goriest ever. For a series made famous by characters ripping out each other’s hearts and spines, that’s saying something.

As far as fighting Ryu, Akuma and the gang, don’t expect that anytime in the near future. Street Fighter x Tekken isn’t coming until 2012 at the earliest, and a Mortal Kombat battle wouldn’t be in the works until that game is finished.

For now, we’ll just have to enjoy the fan-created matches on YouTube. The next Mortal Kombat is coming in 2011 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
