Smackdown vs. Raw 2011

The “online pass” is here to stay, at least for the time being. THQ’s Smackdown vs. Raw 2011 will require either the code packaged in new copies of the game or the $10 purchase of a code to play online over Xbox Live or the PlayStation Network. That’s an increase over UFC Undisputed 2010‘s online pass, which costs $5 and had the option of a free week trial. There’s no trial period with Smackdown vs. Raw.

While EA was the first to announce its “online pass” program, THQ’s UFC Undisputed 2010 was the first game to hit the market with the feature enabled. THQ seriously fumbled the online pass implementation, not even acknowledging its existence until review copies of UFC Undisputed 2010 spilled the news.

The online pass was just one of many issues that hurt Undisputed’s overall sales. The UFC effort is a brand new franchise though. Smackdown vs Raw has more in common with Madden or the NBA licensed games. The series has a loyal following of WWE faithful that buy it annually. THQ is banking on this game’s long-running popularity as it’s increasing the price for online play to $10. Undisputed’s pass was only $5.

Smackdown vs Raw 2011 comes to the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, PlayStation Portable and PlayStation 2 October 26, 2010.
