Kinect and Move were created to two reasons. The first reason is to attract more casual gamers to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The second reason is to extend the life of both consoles. Sony has never been shy in affirming the PlayStation 3 has a life cycle of at least 10 years. From a technological standpoint, the Xbox 360 is more likely to be replaced before the PS3. Kinect is part of the strategy to prevent another Xbox from releasing any time soon. From Ubisoft’s perspective, neither Move or Kinect has what it takes to prevent another console generation.
Ubisoft’s marketing director for Europe Alain Corre told GamesIndustry Kinect and Move will only extend each consoles life by 24 months at the most. However Corre does think each peripheral will be successful in bringing more casual gamers to the high powered consoles.
Ubisoft is supporting Kinect and Move through games such as Child of Eden and Michael Jackson: The Experience. Going forward, Ubisoft thinks more developers will gravitate towards the Nintendo 3DS more than any other piece of hardware.
History shows the PS3 being released six years after the PS2. The Xbox 360 was released 4 years after the Xbox. The industry has already bucked the trend by making consoles as future proof as possible. Neither Microsoft or Sony has hinted at the possibility of releasing another console any time soon.
