EA Sports is trying something completely different with its Wii hockey offering, NHL Slapshot.
While the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 will get NHL 11 as usual, Slapshot is an experience completely designed for the Wii. It even comes packaged with a 21-inch hockey stick peripheral that attaches to the Wii’s motion controller.
The Wii, not famous for its online offerings, again does not offer any online features for Slapshot. Instead, four players play on the same console.
The game will have an extensive career mode. No, really extensive. It takes you all the way from pee-wee hockey to the rinks of the NHL.
To help sell this new hockey experience, EA has acquired the services of The Great One himself, Wayne Gretzky. The NHL legend is cover athlete, playable character and coach during the game’s career mode. Between Gretky’s cover gig and Michael Jordan performing the same function for NBA 2K11, it is a good time to be a retired legend.
Could NHL Slapshot do for Wii hockey what Wii Fit did for exercise? We’ll find out September 7, 2010, when it releases on the Nintendo Wii.
