Movies based on videogames are all the rage these days. Movies based on franchises such as Uncharted, Gears of War and Halo were reported to be at least in the planning stages. Something we haven’t gotten in a while is a good old fashion western. Red Dead Redemption proved the western genre can be extremely successful in the videogame space. Why not take that popularity and parlay that into a film?
Showbiz Spy is reporting a Red Dead Redemption film starring Brad Pitt is in the works. Pitt would play the role of John Marston. The film would stay within Red Dead‘s western theme, but will include some “modern touches.”
Pitt played outlaw Jesse James in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford in 2007. Jesse James is a decent template to portray John Marston’s life before the events of RDR.
At this time we don’t know what movie studio is attached to the film or what the film’s plot would be. My guess is that it will take place before Red Dead Redemption for reasons I won’t go into here. I hope they bring back characters such as Dutch van der Linde and Bill Williamson because they didn’t get a whole lot of screen time. Dutch was a particularly interesting character I would like to learn more about.
