Square Enix has confirmed that the PSP game Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep will be a UMD-only release. You won’t be able to head to the PlayStation Store on launch day and just download a copy. You’ll have to head to an actual store and pick up a $39.99 UMD on September 7, 2010.
For standard PSP owners, this is no big deal. For PSPgo owners, this is a crisis. Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep is expected to be one of the biggest PSP releases in 2010, and now they won’t be able to play it.
So if you want to play Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep, you’re going have to do a few things. First, you’ll need to take your PSPgo and head to either eBay or GameStop to sell it. Then, you need to find yourself a regular PSP. Used or new will do. Finally, place a preorder and wait for the game to launch. Or, you can take it down to two steps and sell your old PSP and pick up the Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep $199.99 Entertainment Pack with the game, 4gb memory stick, silver PSP-3000 and a movie voucher.
There could still be hope though. Dissidia: Final Fantasy didn’t receive a simultaneous retail and PlayStation Store release. The UMD version was in stores in August, 2009, while the downloadable version was released three months later in November, 2009. So Square Enix could just be waiting and trying to encourage UMD sales.
