Champions Online

Champions Online, the superhero-themed MMORPG that isn’t City of Heroes/Villains, is celebrating its one year anniversary. Naturally, they’ve seized this opportunity as a way to get more people to play the game, or start playing it again. From September 1-7, 2010, new or returning players can play Champions Online for free. Just go to their website to download the client.

Meanwhile, current subscribers are enjoying the anniversary funtivities in Millennium City. There’s prizes, special quests, and apparently a giant cake in the middle of the city. Even the mobs are dropping special anniversary gifts, so get to killing!

I tried Champions Online last year but never really got into it. I had fun creating my character and really enjoyed flying around (it’s not on a timer unlike in Aion), but grew tired of the game quickly. Maybe superhero MMORPGs just aren’t my thing, but maybe it’s yours so check it out while it’s still free.

Incidentally, during Free Comic Book Day this past May 2010, I dropped by a local comic book shop and found that they were giving away free copies of Champions Online. I wonder if they’ll do the same for DC Universe Online when it comes out?
