It’s game developer gloating time! Blizzard reports that they sold over three million copies of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty worldwide in the first month of its release. The company brags that this makes StarCraft II poised to earn the distinction of being the bestselling PC game of 2010, and the fastest-selling RPG of all time.

On July 27, 2010, the game was released simultaneously in North America, Europe, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, and the regions of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau. It sold about a million copies on the first day alone, then sold another 1.5 million copies in its first 48 hours.

While this is great and amazing, it’s not too surprising. People have waited about a decade for a sequel, so of course everyone and their mother bought the game within the first two days.

However, I wonder if we’ll see the same amount of speedy sales for the upcoming two expansions, Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void. Not because people didn’t enjoy the game, but because now they’ve had their StarCraft fix and may not feel as hungry this time around. Or I could be totally wrong and bazillions of people will snap them up again within the first 48 hours of release.

Speaking of which, Blizzard has not yet announced the release dates of the next two expansions so stay tuned.
